New Project Phase Includes a Version Upgrade, Streamlined Processes, and AI Governance

Munich, August 26, 2026—Deutsche Bahn is continuing its work on the D-QUANTUM Data Catalog together with b.telligent and Synabi Business Solutions. The kickoff for the next project phase took place on August 12. Plans include migrating to a new software version, streamlining processes, and adding AI governance capabilities.

A Central Repository for Data Knowledge

The DB Data Catalog does not store the Group’s operational data. Instead, it makes knowledge about that data centrally accessible: What data assets are available? What do specific metrics mean? Who is responsible, and under what conditions may information be used or shared? D-QUANTUM brings together business descriptions, metrics, data sources, and data contracts in one place. The result is a reliable repository that provides guidance and supports governed data use.

D-QUANTUM replaced the previously used system at the end of 2022. The implementation was completed on schedule and within the planned budget. Since going live, both the number of users and the catalog’s content have continued to grow.

“Continuing our collaboration is, above all, evidence that the catalog has proven its value in day-to-day operations,” says Kai Kalchthaler, Managing Director at b.telligent. “Of course, a system like this is never static. It needs to accommodate business requirements, keep pace with technological developments, and at the same time provide reliable structures for handling information. The inclusion of AI governance is therefore an important and logical next step.”

New Software Version and Additional Requirements

In the next step, the project partners will migrate the catalog to a new version of the software developed by Synabi. At the same time, they will review and simplify existing processes. The goal is to align work with D-QUANTUM even more closely with Deutsche Bahn’s business processes and prepare the platform for additional requirements.

b.telligent is supporting the initiative, particularly on strategic and organizational data management issues as well as the further development of governance. As the software provider, Synabi is responsible for product development and contributes its technical expertise in D-QUANTUM.

“The kickoff did not feel like a fresh start, but rather like the next stage of a well-established collaboration,” explains Lennart Werner, Management Consultant Data Strategy & Data Culture at b.telligent. “We are building on a live platform whose usage has been steadily increasing since 2022. Now, we want to simplify processes and open the catalog up to additional requirements. When it comes to AI governance, reliability starts with knowing which data is being used, who it is assigned to, and which rules apply.”

AI Governance Becomes Part of the Catalog

With AI governance, the DB Data Catalog is taking on an additional area of responsibility. In the future, it is intended to help document rules, responsibilities, and data foundations for AI applications in a transparent and traceable manner. After all, robust governance begins with the origin, quality, and permitted use of the information involved.

For b.telligent, this topic is the next logical step: “For us, AI governance is not a new discipline, but the natural continuation of data governance. Organizations that have clearly defined data accountability do not need to invent a second set of rules for AI,” Werner adds.
