Wanted: data scientist with a taste for adventure

Big Data, smart data, data engineering, data mining, predictive analytics... the terminology keeps coming. Anyone who works in this environment – like a data scientist – needs a cool head.    More and more data is coming into existence every day; about 90% of all the computer data ever created has been created in the past two years. We owe this to digitization.  It is not surprising therefore that countless new degree programs and careers are being appearing.  Even Harvard University named data scientist as "the sexiest job of the 21st century".

But what do data scientists do and what skills do they need?

The requirements profile of a data scientist

Today's companies are becoming increasingly reliant on the analytical insights of data science teams that are not only technically knowledgeable, but also have business expertise and good communication skills.  The data scientist has become one of the most sought-after workers in the job market. They have a deep understanding of data structures and have mastered a wide range of analytical tools that enable them to extract business-relevant information from huge volumes of data.  They communicate directly with the decision makers and often suggest new avenues for expanding the business or improving business processes.  But data scientists have even more than that to offer.

Working environment

Dr. Michael Allgöwer, management consultant at the b.telligent Data Science competence center, explains why we need data scientists who are all-rounders: "We are a multicultural team made up of many talented people.   Our consultants have a wide range of educational qualifications and experience.  They enjoy working as a team to solve our customers' problems, from rooting out the causes of the problem, to carrying out statistical modeling and then ultimately implementing a technical solution.   Some might consider these to be projects; we see them as adventures into the unknown where our technical skills are what matters."
