Digital Product Passport:
From EU Requirement to Growth Advantage

We make your Digital Product Passport meaningful from the start: from compliance and data quality to new touchpoints for marketing and service.

Why You Should Act Now

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is coming. By 2030, industries such as textiles, household appliances, mobile phones, computers, and furniture will be among the first affected. Step by step, all physical products in the EU will eventually require a Digital Product Passport.

This also comes with the obligation to provide specific product and supply chain data—accurate, up to date, and traceable. Companies that prepare early not only reduce regulatory risks, but also gain an edge over competitors.

Because the DPP is more than just another regulatory requirement. It is a new, direct touchpoint on the product: ideal for cross-selling and upselling, intelligent services, AI-powered communication, and valuable first-party data across the entire product lifecycle.

What You Should Clarify Now:

  • fragezeichen icon

Which products require a DPP—and exactly when?

  • fragezeichen icon

What data do we need for it, and where does that data live today?

  • fragezeichen icon

Can we reliably ensure data quality and timeliness?

  • fragezeichen icon

Do we want to treat the DPP as a pure compliance topic—or use it as a new marketing and service touchpoint?

Your Typical DPP Challenges

Most companies face similar questions when it comes to the Digital Product Passport—across business functions and IT.

Data & Quality

How do we find all relevant data, close gaps, and maintain consistently high quality over time?

Architecture & Tools

What roles do PIM, ERP, DPP providers, and existing systems play, and how do they fit together effectively?

Organization & Ownership

Who takes responsibility within the company, and how do IT, sustainability, product, marketing, and service work together?

Product Touchpoint

How do we build a DPP that not only meets requirements, but is meaningfully integrated into marketing, CRM, and service strategies?

Data Carriers & Processes

QR code or RFID? And at what point in the production process do we reliably attach the data carrier to the product?

Digital Product Passport (DPP): FAQs

What is the Digital Product Passport (DPP), and what are our obligations as a company?

plus icon
The DPP is a digital data record containing product information on sustainability, safety, material composition, and lifecycle, governed by the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, ESPR (EU) 2024/1781. Companies that place products on the EU single market will be required to provide this information in a structured, digital, and accessible format.

Does the DPP already apply to our product, or do we not need to act yet?

plus icon
A DPP only becomes mandatory once a delegated act for the relevant product group enters into force. Apart from batteries, no such delegated act exists as of early 2026. However, companies should start preparing their data systems and supply chain processes now.

What specific deadlines apply, and when do we need to have the DPP in place?

plus icon
The ESPR Working Plan 2025–2030, dated April 16, 2025, is the key reference document. The battery passport, mandatory from February 2027, will be the first required DPP. For construction products, implementation is planned from 2028. All other product groups will follow gradually through 2030.

Which product groups are affected first, and is our industry included?

plus icon
Early priorities include batteries, textiles, electronics, iron and steel, and household appliances. Additional energy-related products such as dishwashers, refrigerators, EV chargers, and smartphones will follow under planned delegated acts. Companies should review the ESPR Working Plan specifically for their own product group.

Who in our company is legally responsible for the DPP?

plus icon
The party directly subject to the obligation is the economic operator, meaning the company that first places the product on the EU market. Suppliers are not directly required by law to provide the DPP, but they will increasingly be asked to supply the necessary data. Companies that cannot provide data risk losing supplier qualifications.

What data must be included in the DPP?

plus icon
Under Annex III of the ESPR, this includes product identification data, such as manufacturer, product number, and TARIC code; sustainability information, such as energy efficiency, recycled content, and carbon footprint; materials and substances; and technical characteristics and proof of conformity. The exact data points vary by product group and delegated act.

Does all DPP data have to be publicly accessible, including sensitive business information?

plus icon
No. A role-based access model is explicitly part of the ESPR framework. Technical specifications and supply chain data are available only to authorized parties. Sensitive business information can remain protected. Only basic data relevant to consumers is publicly accessible.

How is the DPP implemented technically, and which systems and standards do we need?

plus icon
The data is stored in a decentralized way and must be readable by both humans and machines. Access is provided via standardized data carriers, such as QR codes, NFC chips, or barcodes directly on the product. From a technical perspective, companies also need unique product identifiers, access rights management, and standardized APIs.

Which internal IT systems do we need to adapt or integrate?

plus icon
In practice, this involves integrating PLM, ERP, MES, or sustainability systems, as well as connecting external data sources from the supply chain. Standalone solutions or manual data collection will not be sufficient to meet ESPR requirements over the long term.

How do we get the data from our suppliers, and what happens if they do not provide it?

plus icon
DPP data is not created once and then left unchanged. It must be continuously maintained and updated. The focus shifts from individual documents to an end-to-end data model. Suppliers that are unwilling or unable to provide data put the conformity of the entire product passport at risk and, with it, the end product’s ability to be placed on the EU market.

Does the DPP also apply to us if we import products and do not manufacture them ourselves?

plus icon
Yes. The requirements apply to all manufacturers, importers, and companies placing products on the market within the scope of the ESPR. Importers must ensure that their products have a valid DPP, even if the manufacturer is based outside the EU.

How is the DPP connected to other sustainability reporting requirements, such as CSRD? Do we need to capture data twice?

plus icon
The DPP is product-related, at item level, while CSRD is company-related. Many data points overlap, including carbon footprint, material origin, and recycled content. The Omnibus package simplifies CSRD/CSDDD reporting obligations, but not the DPP requirements under the ESPR. A shared, centralized data foundation for both requirements is recommended.

What happens if we do not implement the DPP on time? What penalties could we face?

plus icon
Products without documented circularity will no longer be allowed to be sold in the EU in the future. Market surveillance and customs authorities have direct access to the central DPP registry. Missing or incorrect passports can result in loss of market access. Specific fine structures will be defined for each product group through the delegated acts.
